Upholstery Cleaning Guidelines

These fabrics are manufactured for furniture upholstery, in particular for high-traffic areas where soiling can be a problem.  They are easily cleaned in-situ, will not fade by exposure to daylight nor lose their flame retardancy.  However, as there are some substances which may effect the material, careful attention to regular cleaning will not only prolong their life, but will ensure that their appearance is maintained.

Resistance To Stains And Chemicals
The fabrics are resistant to most mild acids, alkalis and household stains.  Some substances such as ball-point pen ink, lipstick, newsprint and food colourings may be absorbed by the vinyl and cause permanent staining.  This can often be minimised by immediate cleaning with a damp, soapy cloth or sponge.

Cleaning
To maintain their appearance, the fabrics should be cleaned regularly to remove fatty substances in soiling, which may reduce their service life.

In high use gyms, this can be as often as hourly, but the norm should never be below twice daily.  Light soiling can be removed by wiping with a damp soapy cloth or sponge in the direction of the texture and subsequent rinsing with clean water before drying.  If the dirt is ingrained, the surface should be scrubbed in the direction of the texture with a soft brush.

For serious stains, use one part Methylated Spirits to five parts water, applying in the manner above.  Note; this can only be done infrequently, as the Methylated Spirits acts as a solvent.

Do Not Use
Chemical bleaching materials, abrasive cleaners, wax polish or aerosol spray polishes.  The use of these substances is likely to be harmful to PVC coated fabrics and repeated use can result in the removal of plasticiser from the PVC compound, resulting in hardening and subsequently cracking of the material’s surface.
